movies and drinking in the day that the researcher was robbed and stabbed. martin testified that they left the apartment around 11:00 for a 11:30 that night and gone for about an hour. he said between seven and 8:00 the next morning, police arrived, searched the apartment and took others in for questioning. the defense tried to show that his statements were inconsistent with statements he gave to police immediately after the murder when he met with the detectives and prosecutors. he also testified that he dismantled a black and gold folding knife with a three-inch blade found during the investigation. several stains were on the knife, one of them tested positive for blood.
